4 Essential Oil Blends to use as Natural Mood Boosters

Essential oils can be a wonderful support for your moods - helping you find balance, peace and calm, ease stress, experience joy or simply uplift and give you energy. Here are four incredible blends that do just that.

4 essential oil blends to use as natural mood boosters on a marble counter

When most people join with doTERRA they (wisely) invest in a kit to get them started. I chose and adore the Home Essentials Kit. The problem is, once you start experiencing them, you will inevitably free fall down the rabbit hole of oils – in the best possible way! So my dilemma was, what to purchase next?!

Thankfully I opted for the Mood Management Kit – and this is what I’m sharing more on today. It’s a quartet of oils blends designed to support your mood naturally, that just happen to smell divine, and can be used both aromatically and topically.

I am extremely excited about this – as mood disorders are so prevalent in clinical practice. It is far more common than you would believe, for people to experience anxiety, irritability, fatigue and just that persistent feeling of flatness, to name a few.

Essential oils, of course, are not a cure all, but they certainly do have a role to play in natural mood support. They have a very cool ability to interact with receptors in the olfactory system, sending signals to the limbic system in the brain, triggering release of feel good neurotransmitters.

I think they are pretty impressive when combined with proper nutrition, stress management, a solid self-care practice, and regular exercise.

I know you’re going to love these blends – let’s meet them now.

Doterra Mood Management Kit

Balance

From tense, stressed and scattered to balanced and tranquil.

Of all the blends, this one speaks to me the most. I hit complete burn out in my previous career in advertising, because my life lacked balance and I was burning the candle at both ends, working long hours and pushing myself to succeed at something I just wasn’t passionate about. Sometimes my mind would be running on overdrive at night worrying about work, and I’d get up and take a painkiller to relax my muscles and sedate me enough to get to sleep. I wish I had the knowledge and tools I do now back then!

Balance is known as doTERRA’s ‘grounding blend’, it combines five individual oils to create a woody, fresh, sweet and airy aroma. It is like balance in a bottle. I can feel myself move from sympathetic dominance back to parasympathetic with just a few inhales.

It promotes whole-body relaxation and a welcome sense of tranquillity. This is also a scent that the lads quite like – so it’s great to diffuse for the both of you at home after a full-on day at work. My man has even used it as a cologne before we go out – it is definitely a more masculine scent.

Topically, you can apply to the pulse points on your wrists to ease feelings of anxiety, or to the soles of your feet to bring you back down to earth.

Balance contains a blend of:

  • Spruce leaf – grounding, calming, restoring, energising {soft, fresh, sweet}
  • Ho wood leaf – promotes feelings of peace and calm {sweet, fresh, woody}
  • Frankincense resin – grounding, relaxing {warm, spicy, clean}
  • Blue tansy flower – uplifting {fruity, mellow, balsamic}
  • Blue chamomile flower – calming – contains azulene – which bears a lovely blue colour {sweet, herbaceous}
  • Osmanthus flower – soothing, relaxing {sweet, floral}
  • Fractionated coconut oil

 doTERRA's Lavender Peace blend as a natural mood booster

Lavender Peace

From stressed and over doing it to calm and relaxed.

While Balance is perfect for stress induced by the all-work-and-no-play scenario, Lavender Peace is a powerhouse of calm and relaxation. Sometimes you need both – so layering them is a great idea.

I like to think of Lavender Peace as Lavender on steroids.

Lavender Peace is a blend of medicinal lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) with;

  • Cedarwood – calming, promotes restful sleep {nutty, woody, sweet}
  • Ho wood – promotes feelings of peace and calm {sweet, fresh, woody}
  • Ylang ylang – calming, uplifts moods, promotes positivity {sweet, rich, spicy}
  • Marjoram – calming, lessens stress and tension {warm, herbaceous, woody}
  • Roman chamomile – calming, relaxing, promotes restful sleep {floral, sweet, herbaceous}
  • Vetiver – grounding, calming, promotes restful sleep {sweet, woody, smoky}
  • Hawaiian sandalwood – promotes restful sleep, calming, lessens tension, grounding, uplifts moods {rich, honey, sweet, woody}
  • Vanilla extract

The primary constituents in lavender are Linalool and Linalyl acetate, lending its calming effect on the nervous system.

This blend is great to relieve feelings of stress and overwhelm, anxious thoughts and restless sleep.

doTERRAs Elevation blend for a natural mood boost

Elevation

From flat and discouraged to bright and confident.

This one is absolute JOY in a bottle guys. Joy actually has a vibrational frequency higher than that of love. If you want to feel more joy, you need to align to the vibration of joy, and you can use this blend to help you get there – Elevation can elevate your frequency! Isn’t the medicine of plants just amazing?!

Elevation is a blend of;

  • Lavandin and lavender flower – relaxing, calming, soothing {floral, sweet, herbaceous}
  • Tangerine peel – uplifting, soothes anxious thoughts, eases stress {tangy, sweet, fresh}
  • Amyris bark – uplifting, calming, promotes peace and clarity {sweet, balsamic}
  • Clary sage flower and leaf – relaxing, soothing, balancing {woody, herbal, floral}
  • Hawaiian sandalwood – promotes restful sleep, calming, lessens tension, grounding, uplifts moods {rich, honey, sweet, woody}
  • Ho wood – promotes feelings of peace and calm {sweet, fresh, woody}
  • Osmanthus flower – soothing, relaxing {sweet, floral}
  • Lemon myrtle leaf – uplifting, relaxing, calming {fresh, lemony}
  • Melissa flower and leaf – calming, soothing, uplifting, invigorating, promotes emotional balance {citrus, herbaceous}

You can use this aromatically or topically (diluted appropriately) to take you from feeling flat, discouraged or heavy hearted, to joyful, optimistic, cheerful and abundant.

the four essential oil blends in doTERRAs Mood Management Kit

Citrus Bliss

From uninspired to energised and refreshed.

I think of this as my ok lazy bones, get your butt off the couch and start your day! A blend of all the citrus fruits with that comforting vanilla aroma. Because the citrus family are so uplifting and invigorating, they are fabulous to use at the start of your day as a natural energy boost. Aside from providing some spark and motivation, they also support the nervous system, easing stress and anxious thoughts.

Citrus Bliss is a blend of;

  • Wild orange – uplifting, energising {sweet, fresh, citrus}
  • Lemon – uplifting, energising, improves mood {clean, fresh, citrus, bright}
  • Grapefruit – uplifting, invigorating, energising {citrus, floral, fruity}
  • Mandarin – calming, uplifting, eases stress and anxious thoughts {citrus, light, fruity}
  • Bergamot – calming, uplifting, eases stress and anxious thoughts {citrus, lively, fruity}
  • Tangerine – uplifting, eases stress and anxious thoughts {sweet, tangy, fresh}
  • Clementine – uplifting, invigorating, energising {sweet, tangy, fresh}
  • Vanilla bean absolute
